Shangri-La Nanchang Pre-Opening Shooting -

Last December brought another great opportunity to work with Shangri-La, this time the Nanchang Shangri-La needed our photography skills for four shots of their new hotel.

We planned to arrive the day before the shoot, so we could look around the different locations. We arrived at Hongqiao airport in the morning but could not check-in as our flight had been canceled. As a result we had to take another flight from Pudong airport. We called our driver to turn back to the airport and pick us up to take us to Pudong airport. Luckily we still had time to get to Pudong and catch the flight. Typically however, our new flight got delayed so we waited for around 5 ~ 6 hours. By the time we got Nanchang, it was evening already. We had to do a rush recce though all the locations needing to be photographed. It was pretty intense only having a day and half for the 4 shots. Before arriving at Nanchang the plan was to shoot at least one shot for a destination photo, but the time restraints meant that this was not possible.

On the first day, we started with the exterior; it was a very cold morning. Scott was so preoccupied with the shoot that he had forgotten to bring his gloves and by the end of the shoot, his fingers were numb to the point that he struggled to press the cameras shutter release. After we finished the first shot, Scott was in pain, but we still managed to get a really nice shot. The sky was so clear and the sunlight was optimal.

The next day, we needed to shoot another destination shot. The subject was the Pavilion of Prince Teng, a landmark of Nanchang. The communication manger had an idea of the shot that she wanted, so we arrived on location in the early morning, when it was still dark and started to look for the right angle to achieve the shot. The area was in the midst of demolition, meaning the buildings in the surrounding area were not particularly safe. We found the perfect vantage on the top floor of one of the buildings. In an abandoned room in somone’s now vacant home we got the perfect angle to photograph the pavilion.

Although it was not the biggest shoot, only having to take 4 shots, it was a very intense job. We combated the shoot’s challenges and were blessed by the results.

UV x La Prairie

Limelight where back at UV; Paul Paireit’s multi sensory dining experience. We were tasked with covering La Prairie’s experience at his fine dining establishment. The job required both photography and a video.

The team started at Mr and Mrs Bund Paul’s Bund side restaurant hours before La Prairie would meet for their drinks reception. Here a general preparations and setting shots where taken at the scenic bund side restaurant. La Prairie arrived and after a drinks reception where escorted to the bus that would ferry them to the super secret location of Ultra Violet.

Upon arrival the La Prairie guests where ushered into the building where they had drinks at the UV bar before being escorted into the dinning hall. From here on in the team had to cover 15 courses the guests would enjoy while working around the low light conditions and fast paced kitchen atmosphere that chef Paul Pairet insisted we not interfere with.

The team had to be subtle in filming the guests and efficient yet non-obstructive when filming the kitchen. With lots of impressive dishes and their glamorous presentation the team had a lot to film.

Within the dinning hall the show was truly a spectacle with visual effects on the table and walls the use of dry ice, music, the waiters and chefs interactions the show gave us a lot to capture. The challenges of filming came in the form of low light conditions that we could not interfere with and a need not to be notice and ruin the dining experience.

The Limelight teams familiarity with the restaurant and its workings meant we knew where to be and what to cover and when. By the end of the night we had covered the evening and could provide La Prairie with photos of the event and a video.

Mifan Mama / Shining Star Charity Video

Last year, we filmed a charity short for an orphanage that specifically cared for children who are blind or have visual disabilities. A group of nine children came in to talk a bit about themselves. All of the children that came in front of the camera were visually impaired, all under the age of ten, and all adorable. The idea was to have them come in, sit down in front of the camera, state their name, age and aspirations for the future. We aimed to interview each child, within five to ten minute increments, so they didn't become uncomfortable. We preset our equipment; lights, microphones and cameras so there would be no waiting period for the children to get nervous. We did however neglect to think of one thing, the height of the chair. The first child was placed on the chair and became frightened because his feet could not touch the ground.  We took away the chair and reposition the lights, microphones and cameras. After that minor bump, the interview process ran more or less smoothly. A few children who were too shy to talk preferred to sing us a song, some who were too afraid to be interviewed by themselves stood next to their buddy during the process.

CALYPSO Terrace Lounge Opening - CALYPSO

The Limelight team were invited to cover the opening of Calypso terrace lounge. This trendy establishment featured 1950’s style paparazzi photographers all kitted with trench coats and trilbies as well as antique cameras to capture the guests arriving on the red carpet, a retro spectacle adding class to a simple entrance.

Upon entry to the restaurant lounge the night began with live percussive performances featuring the restaurants cooks banging pots and pans and improvised cocktail shaker maracas in an impressive and surprising medley. The night also feature live bands and DJs.

With the great atmosphere the open terrace roof provided the exclusive venue we covered the night and where able to capture the glamour of the experience.

Time Out Shanghai: Stolen Phone Tour /

For this project Limelight teamed up with Time Out Shanghai in a covert operation to lead and document 2 very lucky people on an unforgettable tour of Shanghai. Showing some of the best events/locations Shanghai has to offer.

The concept was to leave an apparently “lost” phone on the street and wait for someone to take the bait. After the phone was picked up a message would be sent “Are you trying to steal our phone?!?” Depending on their answer the adventure began with a prompt to jump in a London Hackney cab that pulled up.

Stop 1 on the tour was to the back of a seemingly ordinary store where our couple could watch some of vintage film collector Liu Debao’s 3600 cultural revolution-era films. An experience in history and culture the pair saw the films projected in their original format, the film and viewing experience is a window in time to an era gone by.

On to stop 2 of the tour where we took the pair to a secret location for lunch at Paul Pairet’s exclusive Ultraviolet restaurant hidden in the deepest depths of Shanghai for a multi sensory experience that would forever render any other lunch for these 2 individuals obsolete.

After returning from the secret depths it was time for stop 3. The Jazz Bar at Peace Hotel featuring some amazing talents some of whom have been resident at the bar since the 1980s topping off an afternoon of culture, history and fine dinning.

It was time for the 2 to become many, we told them to get some friends together for Stop 4: Shouning Lu for the best street food Shanghai has to offer. Contrasting with the earlier lunch this time the group dined on the local food cooked on the streets of Shanghai.

The tour ended at Stop 5 in the expensive and exclusive bund side Bar Rouge where the group partied with champagne, cocktails and shots to the early hours of the morning ending in one of Shanghai’s more scenic nightspots.

To film this video a mix of hidden cameras and sneaky camera men where used in the pre planned locations with the intent on showing just a small snapshot of the amazing activities, venues and locations Shanghai has to offer.

Limelight Studio Time Out Shanghai

2014 Beijing Shangri La, World Summit Wing Hotel Vertical Run - 2014

For this project the Limelight team were sent to Beijing to film the Shangri-La World Summit Wing Vertical Run. Where 1000+ runners took up the challenge to run the 2041 steps, 330 metres of the 82-floor World Summit Wing building.

On the day we arrived we were blessed with a perfect blue sky a rarity in Beijing and sadly it was not too last as the clouds moved in on the 2nd day of shooting.

We had the challenge of capturing all the runners from start to finish. As we had learnt from the previous years results we would only have a 10-minute window to cover the elites starting the race and when they finish on the helipad. We did a recce of the building to discover the best locations and how long it would take us to get there in time to catch the runners. For this we made use of the hotels service elevator to get to floors we otherwise would not have access to and we timed how long it would take to get from each position so we could estimate how long we could cover one area without missing anything further along the race.

We decided that to cover the race and not miss anything important we would split into 3 teams; the 1st team would be in the lobby covering the race starts and also were responsible for capturing the opening ceremony and the warm ups. The 2nd team was positioned in the staircase to capture the actually race as the runners proceeded up the building. The 2nd team was aided by Go Pros positioned throughout the route to get a wider range of the run. The 3rd team set up on the roof covering the finish line, post race interviews and the various events/awards that happened as the race continued in the background Throughout the event batteries and camera cards where shuttled up and down between the 3 teams from our charging and wrangling station.

10 minutes 1 second after the race had begun Piotr Lobodzinski of Poland crossed the finish line and our window to cover the leaders of the race had closed. At this point we had covered what we needed and by the mid afternoon the race coverage had gone well and with a plethora of footage we left back for Shanghai.

Shangri-La Sanya Resort & Spa -

Sanya is a wonderful place for relaxing in the southern part of China. People call it “Eastern Hawaii”. It has perfect weather, beautiful beaches and delicious food. This time Limelight studio went there for shooting the first Shangri-La resort in China. It was a really exciting job.

When we arrived the communication manager took us around the resort for viewing. It is a very large resort which has their own private beach. However at the time the project was still heavily under construction which created a few challenges for us but we did manage to achieve the results necessary in our final imagery.

Our interior room shot went quite smoothly as the team did a great job on creating the mock up room for us, and beautifully adding details with props.

Our exterior was a little more difficult as it was under a lot of construction still and most of the garden was not finished.

With the help of our team of Limelight retouchers we managed to put together a beautiful shot of the exterior where we had to use multiply images from different days as the weather was also causing some difficulties for us.

There was a lot of building materials and people we had to edit from the final shot as they were all on their own deadline to finish the construction.

With a fantastic team effort we put together a multiple of images on this project in Sanya, China which we were very happy with. Here are 2 of the final images of the interior and exterior we shot and hope you enjoy viewing them as much as we did shooting it.

The St Regis Lijiang Residences -

This time for our latest project Limelight studio went to Lijiang, China for HBA where we shot the St Regis Lijiang Residences. Scott commented that this was one of our toughest projects in a while. We had to face a lot of unexpected problems along the way.

As usual our photographs always require an extremely high standard, but this time the bar was set even higher. For all the 12 shots we collaborated with an onsite interior designer. With each room we needed to rearrange every piece of furniture and decoration to suit accordingly. Everything that could be seen in the camera, needed to be discussed with the designer beforehand. Usually when we shoot interiors for hotels, we only need to do minor adjustments. But this time we needed to add and adjust nearly all pieces.

The first two shots came with a series of troubles. The second one was a serious one. On our second shot in a series of 12 we unfortunately had our camera knocked to the ground by a curtain. We saw it all happening but no one could reach the camera in time. It was like a   slow motion movie scene in full play. Scott took a deep breath and checked his beloved baby . The lens hood was smashed, the zoom ring was twisted, and the camera didn’t work. However we were extremely lucky as Scott restarted the camera it began to work. The lens itself was still functional.  Everyone felt a lot of relief. Being in the middle of China with no back up camera body or wide-angle lens we couldn’t imagine what would happen if the camera didn’t work.

There was anther accident happened during the first night of shooting. There were two fireplaces in different living rooms. Because those rooms are model room, so some of items weren’t fully functional, such as the fireplaces. The client hoped that they could see flames on the fireplace. When we tried to turn it on, the flame was unstable and inconsistent. We had to ask an engineer to pour alcohol manually into it. Since it wasn’t controllable we needed to take as many photos as we could for the flame. Sometimes the flame was only on the left side and sometimes it went to the other side of the fireplace. It didn’t make a perfect line on the fireplace, however when we got enough images we could put them all together in Photoshop.

Overall we had a lot of good luck. We overcame a lot of obstacles for these shots to happen. When we saw the final images we think it was well worth the problems. We hope you enjoy these images as much as we do.
