Shangri-La Nanchang Pre-Opening Shooting -

Last December brought another great opportunity to work with Shangri-La, this time the Nanchang Shangri-La needed our photography skills for four shots of their new hotel.

We planned to arrive the day before the shoot, so we could look around the different locations. We arrived at Hongqiao airport in the morning but could not check-in as our flight had been canceled. As a result we had to take another flight from Pudong airport. We called our driver to turn back to the airport and pick us up to take us to Pudong airport. Luckily we still had time to get to Pudong and catch the flight. Typically however, our new flight got delayed so we waited for around 5 ~ 6 hours. By the time we got Nanchang, it was evening already. We had to do a rush recce though all the locations needing to be photographed. It was pretty intense only having a day and half for the 4 shots. Before arriving at Nanchang the plan was to shoot at least one shot for a destination photo, but the time restraints meant that this was not possible.

On the first day, we started with the exterior; it was a very cold morning. Scott was so preoccupied with the shoot that he had forgotten to bring his gloves and by the end of the shoot, his fingers were numb to the point that he struggled to press the cameras shutter release. After we finished the first shot, Scott was in pain, but we still managed to get a really nice shot. The sky was so clear and the sunlight was optimal.

The next day, we needed to shoot another destination shot. The subject was the Pavilion of Prince Teng, a landmark of Nanchang. The communication manger had an idea of the shot that she wanted, so we arrived on location in the early morning, when it was still dark and started to look for the right angle to achieve the shot. The area was in the midst of demolition, meaning the buildings in the surrounding area were not particularly safe. We found the perfect vantage on the top floor of one of the buildings. In an abandoned room in somone’s now vacant home we got the perfect angle to photograph the pavilion.

Although it was not the biggest shoot, only having to take 4 shots, it was a very intense job. We combated the shoot’s challenges and were blessed by the results.

Scott up on the scissor lift, 8m off the ground while holding his umbrella while the owner of the entire hospital looks on (in white). The lift was just big enough to fit one person along with the tripod. The wind after the storm was blowing the lift just a bit, and with long exposures, it was difficult to get a clean shot. We used a balance of a higher ISO in order to have shorter shutter speeds (keeping in mind to not raise the ISO too high to limit grain/noise).

A guard looks up as we set up on the roof for one of our exterior angles.

We shot multiple exteriors for Red Leaf due to the owner being unhappy with the angle. The first angle (picture directly below) was used temporarily, but had too much of the other hospital buildings, as the owner preferred to focus more on the main building. We ended up taking a few more angles before finally getting a scissor lift and taking the finalized shot (pictured at the bottom). Which do you prefer?

This is the angle taken from the roof. The owner preferred to show less of the brick buildings (also part of the hospital), and focus on the main building.

The owner finally liked this exterior angle, and the sky is the actual sky on that night. This shot was taken with Scott on the scissor lift (pictured above) right after a relatively brief, but powerful thunderstorm; it was still raining when this was shot. The rain turned out to be a bit of a blessing in disguise as the storm cleared the sky and created a dramatic view.

Redleaf Women's Hospital

Last Summer, we shot a series of images for state of the art women's hospital, Red Leaf consisting of a series of lifestyle and interior shots. Their facilities are like a cross between a hospital and a high end hotel. Despite being right on Huaihai Rd, it still has the seclusion, privacy, and security of a remote location.

We lit this scene to appear like the daylight was beaming in from the windows. We took a little while to direct the doctor because in a real situation, she would normally lower herself to the eye level of the patient, whereas the varying heights were essential for the composition. Her professionalism as a doctor made it difficult for her to remember it was a photo as her reflex was to continue to lower herself to eye level with the patient.

Group shot - Redleaf requested bright/white walls, so we had to use a number of lights to light the scene evenly. As you can see from the behind the scenes shot, it was actually quite dim inside.

We opted for a more high key lighting for this shot of a nurse looking on as a mother smiles at her newborn. We added in the table and plant in the foreground at the last moment in order to provide a little bit of depth and distance, almost as if not to disturb this intimate moment.

A collection of worker portraits from Ultraviolet UV

Worker Portraits.jpg

WHAT: A collection of worker portraits from the Ultraviolet (UV) construction

WHEN: 2010 -2012

WHERE: The building site of UV restaurant

WHY: This was another personal project of Limelight Studio that ran parallel with the 360-degree panorama of the building construction.

HOW: On select visits to the UV site, Limelight would grab workers on the scene and take a portrait using the door frame as a guide for consistency and composition. The concept of these shots was fairly simple: Limelight felt it was important to document individuals involved in this project. Keeping them in their uniforms, dirt on their face, and sometimes tools still in hand, Justin or Scott led the workers outside in front of the restaurant construction in progress and took their photograph. Later in post-production, a handful of portraits were chosen and composited to make the final image.

FUN FACT: Scott and Justin are in the composite as well. Can you spot them?

CAMERA: Canon EOS 5D Mark II with 24-70mm/2.8 lens

PHOTOGRAPHY: Limelight Studio | Scott Wright, Justin Chiu

Starbucks Location Shoot

At the end of June 2013, we went on location to shoot three product shots for Starbucks. For the first of these shots, we really had to take control of our environment and used multiple scrims and blacks to block out and control the daylight. From there, we used various tungsten lights and reflector boards strategically placed to create our own subdued lighting to highlight the beverage.

Other than the stylist having to get each coffee just right, this was the trickiest part of the day because the sprinkles were very small and came out quite heavy. We tried multiple methods in trying to capture a graceful sprinkling effect including the use of grinded up coffee beans to make the sprinkle seem larger. In the end, we resolved in taking a separate shot using a higher shutter speed and a concentrated light (in the form of a snoot) to highlight the falling of the sprinkles. Using post-production, the falling sprinkles were combined in the final image.

180° Panorama of the Mount Kinabalu

Mount Kinabalu Summit

Mount Kinabalu Summit

WHAT: 180° panorama of the sunrise hitting the facade Mount Kinabalu

WHEN: April 2011

WHERE: Kinabalu National Park, Malaysia

WHY: Being one of the tallest mountains in South-East Asia, Mount Kinabalu was a big attraction for Scott and his buddies for a vacation trip with some of "the boys." It took two days to climb over eight kilometers (5 miles) to the summit.

HOW: Packed with sixteen kilograms (35 lbs.) of camera gear, the boys climbed the mountain with a little assistance from a guide and a bit of regret in carrying the extra gear. Just before sunrise on the second day, the boys reached the summit. Because of the unpredictable weather at the elevation, there is an advised time limit at the summit. Following sunrise, the path becomes nearly invisible, and descending down impossible. With the clouds and fog breaking perfectly (a rarity) in the 20 minute window at the summit, Scott captured the glorious view using his trusty Gitzo tripod with his 360 panorama head just as the sunrise hit the facade of Mount Kinabalu.

CAMERA: Canon 5D Mark II with 16-35/2.8mm lens

PHOTOGRAPHER: Scott Wright | Limelight Studio

Architectural Digest Magazine AD

AD5.png

CLIENT: Architectural Digest (AD) Magazine

WHAT: Interior shots of various homes

WHEN: 2011-2012

WHERE: Various homes scouted by AD Magazine and crowned some of the most beautiful architectural houses in China. Limelight covers many of the homes out of Shanghai.

WHY: Limelight Studio was asked by Architectural Digest China to join them in visiting some of the most architecturally interesting homes located in Shanghai and capturing their charming style.

AD2.png

HOW: When shooting interiors with AD, all shots for a home usually start mid-morning and end in the early afternoon (all within a single day). Stylist(s) with the magazine scout out the homes before hand and choose key aspects they want to highlight. Then, on the day of the shoot, Limelight will go through again with the stylist(s) and decipher which composition and angle will best represent each feature. Since these homes are chosen for their spread and charm, it is extremely important to have a natural feel, true to the color and lighting of the home, therefore minimal lighting is typically used when compared to our hotel interiors.
