WHAT: A collection of worker portraits from the Ultraviolet (UV) construction

WHEN: 2010 -2012

WHERE: The building site of UV restaurant

WHY: This was another personal project of Limelight Studio that ran parallel with the 360-degree panorama of the building construction.

HOW: On select visits to the UV site, Limelight would grab workers on the scene and take a portrait using the door frame as a guide for consistency and composition. The concept of these shots was fairly simple: Limelight felt it was important to document individuals involved in this project. Keeping them in their uniforms, dirt on their face, and sometimes tools still in hand, Justin or Scott led the workers outside in front of the restaurant construction in progress and took their photograph. Later in post-production, a handful of portraits were chosen and composited to make the final image.

FUN FACT: Scott and Justin are in the composite as well. Can you spot them?

拍摄方法:整个UV餐厅的建筑情况是相当复杂繁琐的,时间跨度也很长。每当其中的某一部分完成时,Limelight Studio都会邀请一些工人师傅来为他们拍摄个人肖像以此留念。这组照片的拍摄概念十分简单但具有非凡意义。Limelight Studio的同仁也觉得为这群工作了两年之久建设出如此美轮美奂餐厅的工人师傅拍照具有十分重要意义。拍摄时,他们身着工作服,脸上还带有工作时的尘土,手里还攥紧建筑工具,这时他们最自然的状态,最能体现他们的纯真。只听见“咔嚓咔嚓”,就这样我们为他们记录下了一张张照片。然而在后期处理中,我们甄选了部分照片并加以合成构成最后的组照。

WHAT: 180° panorama of the sunrise hitting the facade Mount Kinabalu

WHEN: April 2011

WHERE: Kinabalu National Park, Malaysia

WHY: Being one of the tallest mountains in South-East Asia, Mount Kinabalu was a big attraction for Scott and his buddies for a vacation trip with some of "the boys." It took two days to climb over eight kilometers (5 miles) to the summit.

HOW: Packed with sixteen kilograms (35 lbs.) of camera gear, the boys climbed the mountain with a little assistance from a guide and a bit of regret in carrying the extra gear. Just before sunrise on the second day, the boys reached the summit. Because of the unpredictable weather at the elevation, there is an advised time limit at the summit. Following sunrise, the path becomes nearly invisible, and descending down impossible. With the clouds and fog breaking perfectly (a rarity) in the 20 minute window at the summit, Scott captured the glorious view using his trusty Gitzo tripod with his 360 panorama head just as the sunrise hit the facade of Mount Kinabalu.

拍摄缘由:作为东南亚最高的山峰,Mount Kinabalu对于Limelight Studio有着极大的吸引力,大家都想一看究竟。此外在路途上花费两天时间登到山顶也是非常有趣的体验。

拍摄方法:携带近16公斤的摄影器材,Limelight Studio开始此次攀爬之旅,并在第二天日出之前我们一行人顺利抵达山顶。我们寻找到一块宽阔的空地作为拍摄地点以便能更好的捕捉到日出的奇幻景色。但是由于天气原因无法预测所以我们的拍摄时间十分有限。如果天气情况不容乐观,能见度将会十分低显然是不利于拍摄的。所以我们团队用了极短的时间来设置360度摄影装置,目的就是能够拍出令人赞叹的日出美景照片。

WHAT: Promotional interior shots of the PuLi Hotel and Spa

WHEN: April 2010

WHERE: The PuLi Hotel and Spa located in the Jing-An district of Shanghai

WHY: The Taiwanese magazine reached out to Limelight Studio for a number of interior shots of the PuLi Hotel and Spa, which is highly recognized for its unique structural layout creating a relaxing and peaceful environment right in the heart of bustling Shanghai.

HOW: The enticing entrance lobby at the PuLi produces a warm inviting natural light from its floor to ceiling wide paned windows therefore minimal lighting was required to enhance the beauty of the lobby. There were just a few highlights added to give a bit of an emphasis to the furniture in the room such as the cabinet and chairs. A 5 shot bracket in 1-stop increments was done, and the shots were then combined in post-production with a combination of the selectively lit areas.

拍摄缘由:台湾建筑师杂志之前已经和Limelight Studio进行过详细沟通,并针对璞丽酒店内景设计拍摄与我们探讨。希望我们的拍摄能呈现出一种高端唯一轻松的感觉完全区别于上海国际化大都市的匆忙感。

拍摄方法:拍摄璞丽酒店入口的大厅营造出一种平和的感觉,地板上自然光的反光呈现出温暖之意并把酒店衬托的更加美丽。我们拍摄时,需要增加一些高光在座椅和桌子上面,这样做的目的是使感觉更加充分。再用不同曝光的方法拍摄最后在后其中将其合成。

WHAT: Fashion and Clothing shots

WHEN: August 2009

WHERE: Limelight Studio

WHY: Japanese-style boutique clothing shop, The Source wanted a different and unique way to showcase their new pieces.

HOW: By using long shutter speeds and firing flashes multiple times as the model changed poses through one exposure, we were able to create the "ghosting" effect that makes it appear as if the model is moving. To produce the swirls of pinks and purple, gels were use on the flash. This combination created a distinct look, while showcasing the unique street-style that The Source supplies.

The Longement Shanghai 上海龙之梦丽晶酒店拍摄暴风雨


If you look closely at the clouds, what do you see? A friend pointed out an image of a dragon breathing fire down onto the city. Another said it looked like a bird flying across the city.       如果   你近距离观察云朵,你会看到什么?一位朋友指出图片中好像一条龙正在城市上空盘旋。另一位朋友说它象一只横飞过城市上空的鸟。

WHAT: Shanghai's skyline lit up by a colossal thunderstorm

WHERE: Longemont Hotel – 52nd floor Business Lounge

WHEN: August 2010

WHY: This thunderstorm was one of the biggest storms during the year causing power outages, hail, and various flooding throughout the city. Missing this moment to capture the grandeur of this storm was out of the question. 

HOW: This photograph was shot with only a tripod during a period of a couple of minutes. Scott grabbed the second camera that he had brought along with the tripod and hurried over quickly to take the shot before the storm passed. Usually, to capture an image like this, you need to use a fairly long shutter speed to capture the lightening striking down on to the city but for this instance, the storm came in during the day and despite the clouds and thunderstorm, the skies were still quite bright. There are difficulties taking long exposures during the day because of the added light, so Scott had to find the perfect balance not to overexpose the shot but capture the lightening as well.

拍摄缘由:此次暴风雨是当年中最大的一场并且引起了电力中断,冰雹以及城中发大水。十分想念拍摄此次壮观暴风雨的时刻。

拍摄方法:这一张图片只是用了三脚架和延时摄影的方法。我们除了拿着三脚架还抓着另一只相机以迅雷不及掩耳之势拍摄,为了就是能赶在在暴风雨消失之前记录下这一时刻。通常,拍一张像这样的图片,你需要用慢门来拍摄天际中的闪电。因为在一天中拍摄长时间曝光的照片是有一点难度的,由于光线会一点点的增加,所以我们找到了一个很好的曝光平衡来拍摄闪电。

WHAT: Owner & Chef de Cuisine, Paul Pairet

WHERE: Ultraviolet Restaurant

WHEN: October 2011

WHY: Renowned French Chef, Paul Pairet of "Mr & Mrs Bund" and "Ultraviolet" needed a portrait for promotional and media usage leading up to the opening of "Ultraviolet." Limelight Studio wanted to place Pairet in front of the projection screen since it is such an important aspect of the multi-sensory restaurant. This particular projection of the spiral was chosen because it resembles the shape of a snail. The snail represents escargot, a classic French cuisine, which ties back into Pairet's French background.

HOW: We used no additional lighting on this shot as we used the light from the projector as a key light, while the remaining ambient light was used as fill. In postproduction, the photograph was transformed into black and white with the exception of the purple spirals projected onto Paul. We don't normally like to do color isolation, but it was fitting in this case. This was done to draw an extra emphasis on the projections, to highlight Ultraviolet's signature color, and to remind the audience of the unique experience that Ultraviolet provides when dining at their restaurant.

拍摄缘由:知名法式餐厅主厨Paul Pairet-“Mr&Mrs Bund”和“Ultraviolet”餐厅创始人,想要拍摄人物肖像和视频以此来庆祝餐厅的开幕。Limelight Studio想让主角站在保护屏幕的前方因为这在餐厅中是一个很重要的方向。选择这个特别的旋转保护屏是因为它的形状看起来象蜗牛。而蜗牛在法式菜肴中是一道经典的烹饪菜品且又与Pairet的法式背景相融合。

拍摄方法:我们用保护屏散发出来的光线作为主光源,不需要太强的光线因为保护屏散发出来的光线足以照亮背景。在后期制作方面,摄影师将照片转变成黑白颜色除了Paul身上的紫色部分。因为这个颜色是餐厅的主色调。这样做的用意是强调主体并让用餐者可以在餐厅用餐时有一个独一无二的体验。

PHOTO OF THE WEEK: Forever Young 童真依旧

WHAT: Two children playing on the beach

WHEN: 1996

WHERE: Byron Bay, New South Wales, Australia

WHY: Not far off in the distance during a day of relaxing on the beach, Scott observed some children relishing the day, making new friends and scavenging for sea creatures. He caught this moment right after these two free spirited kids, who were catching and running around with crabs, tried to give one as a gift to two others who were fully suited head to toe. The fully clothed children shrieked and ran off, while these other two stood there, confused by the refusal.

HOW: This shot was all about being at the right place at the right time, capturing that special moment between two playing children. This is one of Scott’s first shots and one of his favorites. Compositionally speaking, it is balanced with the rule of thirds, which is quite difficult to do especially when trying to capture a moment between children, an environment you can’t control. The color tint comes from the tungsten film that produces a strong blue cast when shooting outdoors.

拍摄缘由:在沙滩上休息了几乎一整天,Limelight Studio团队发现有一些小孩正在沙滩上玩耍,他们正在沙滩上寻觅乐趣并找到贝克海螺一起玩耍。我们抓拍到了其中两个小孩,他们正在追逐嬉戏。只见两个小孩尖叫着互相追逐表现出彼此好奇的眼神。

拍摄方法:拍摄此张照片最重要的就是需要在合适的地点以及适当的时机。这是Limelight Studio所拍摄的作品之中最喜欢的照片之一。从构图中可以见得,整个画面感比较均衡,要想获得这种平衡感十足得构图需要找到合适的时机来拍摄,因为环境你无法控制。而在色彩上,因为使用胶片得关系所以有一种蓝色得调子。

WHAT: The “Oasis with Romantic Pool” room

WHEN: September 2012

WHERE: Banyan Tree Shanghai on the Bund

WHY: Banyan Tree wanted promotional photographs for their rooms and suites to show a quiet escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. They wanted their photographs to portray a quiet serene getaway feel with warm colors as well as the great view of the Huangpu River and Shanghai’s skyline.

HOW: For this shot, the pool and the view were the most important aspects of the room, therefore we decided the best angle to represent these aspects in addition to the feel and space of the area, was through a straight on shot.

The lighting needed to accentuate the existing mood, so we enhanced the existing lighting, while selectively choosing a few features to give an extra kick and highlight. There were extra lights added to the hotel’s overhead lights to emphasize the lighting on the cushions as well as the pool. Then, the couch was lit to show a bit of the texture of the fabric and to add a bit of contrast with the finish of the wood flooring. Lastly, to get a clear shot of Shanghai’s skyline, we went to the rooftop of the Banyan Tree to get a clear unobstructed long exposure to achieve a nice glow of the building lights (we always try to mimic the actual angle and view to stay consistent with the room), which complemented to the overall warm feel of the image.

拍摄地点:上海外滩悦榕庄大酒店

拍摄缘由: 悦榕庄大酒店想要为它们的客房及套房拍摄一组宣传照片,目的是展示一个自在安静远离城市喧嚣的生活空间。此外,他们也希望照片能描绘出一个映衬窗外黄浦江并与天际对比出暖色调的壮丽美景,使贵宾内心平静下来。

方法 首先,选取拍摄的位置和角度,必须是最能代表总体感觉的空间区域。在这张照片中,泳池以及景观是房间中最重要的两方面,因此,正面直接拍摄这两部分特征至关重要。

其次,灯光的选择需要强调出这种感觉,所以选择正确的灯光类型也是十分重要的。我们在天花板上打了光,同时着重强调打在靠垫和泳池的光线。此外,沙发也被灯光照亮以此来展示布料的质感同时和木质游泳池有一些对比的感觉,最后,为了得到一张干净清晰的天际线照片,我们特地去悦榕庄酒店的天台拍了一张清晰、一览无余,长曝光照片,以此表现出高楼大厦通明璀璨流光溢彩的夜色,同时也完整地增加了照片地温暖感。

CLIENT: Jazz du Funk (JDF), International Dance Studio

WHAT: JDF 2011 Calendar - Astrological Signs. The concept was to reinterpret the 12 Zodiac signs through the dancers of JDF. 

WHERE: Home of JDF's Art Director, Julian Mei

WHEN: December 2010

HOW: This shoot had special circumstances because the majority of the images entailed lots of paint and little clothing.  It required an intimate environment for the dancers and so almost all the images were shot in Julian's home over the course of two full days. Big sheets of black and white cloth were brought in for the background and also to act as curtains to provide a separate space for the photographs to be taken.

拍摄时间:2010年十二月份

拍摄方法:此次拍摄有很多特殊情况。首先是大多数照片都需要在家里拍摄完成其次,这些图片需要在一天之内完成,这就意味着一张照片只有30到45分钟的拍摄时间,因此每个人每件事都必须保持进度,各尽其所能在最快最短的时间内完成拍摄。大匹黑色及白色的布被当做背景同时也可以当作窗帘为拍摄提供一个独立空间 。这次拍摄需要为舞者提供一个私密空间,因为大多数照片需要大量人体彩绘和裸露画面。

WHO: American Standard

WHAT: Appliance and fixture promotional shots

WHEN: March 2008

WHY: Limelight Studio was commissioned by Interbrand and American Standard to help create a campaign to feature their new fixtures and appliances. American Standard wanted to produce a light airy feel to go with the new advanced appliances that they created. Everything had to look fresh, crisp, and sharp.

HOW: For this shoot, we needed to create three sets entirely from scratch. A warehouse outside of the city was rented, giving us a blank canvas / space to create any feel we needed.

Limelight spent a month designing the layout of three sets, taking all aspects of the composition into consideration. The tree used in the 1st image was brought in to add to the naturalistic element and the crew created a water wall to produce the drizzling effect outside the window.

In the end, it required the assistance of a forty-member assembly crew over the course of three, twenty-hour days to construct the three sets and install the lighting and flooring according to our designs. From there, it was just the “simple” matter of capturing the vision we created through our lens.

FUN FACT: The image at the top was so well received that American Standard ending up using it for their global campaign, including billboards across China. Many of the images are still being used on the American Standard website to this day.

时间:2008年3月

缘由:Limelight Studio受邀于Interbrand公司,为全球卫浴领先品牌美标拍摄新产品宣传照片。美标希望我们能拍摄出一种清新,光线通透的自然感觉使其产品看起来更加干净,冷酷锐利。

拍摄方法:针对此次拍摄我们创造了三种不同的空间设置,同时租赁一家仓库以获得空景,这样可以创造出任何我们需要的感觉。

我们花费了一个月的时间给这三套布景设计模板,并对其结构组成予以周全考虑。在第一张图片中设置了一棵树用来增加自然的元素,以及制造了一面水墙来彰显窗外蒙蒙细雨的感觉。

最后,我们通过四十个人员的协助,花费了六十小时来组装这三套布景,并安装灯光和地板。最终,只需要通过我们的镜头记录下这些布景就可以了。

花絮:最上面的那张照片得到了客户很高的评价,因此美标把它用在了全球宣传上,也包括了中国的户外展示。直至今日,很多照片仍然被用于其官方网站。
