Shangri-La Nanchang Pre-Opening Shooting -

Last December brought another great opportunity to work with Shangri-La, this time the Nanchang Shangri-La needed our photography skills for four shots of their new hotel.

We planned to arrive the day before the shoot, so we could look around the different locations. We arrived at Hongqiao airport in the morning but could not check-in as our flight had been canceled. As a result we had to take another flight from Pudong airport. We called our driver to turn back to the airport and pick us up to take us to Pudong airport. Luckily we still had time to get to Pudong and catch the flight. Typically however, our new flight got delayed so we waited for around 5 ~ 6 hours. By the time we got Nanchang, it was evening already. We had to do a rush recce though all the locations needing to be photographed. It was pretty intense only having a day and half for the 4 shots. Before arriving at Nanchang the plan was to shoot at least one shot for a destination photo, but the time restraints meant that this was not possible.

On the first day, we started with the exterior; it was a very cold morning. Scott was so preoccupied with the shoot that he had forgotten to bring his gloves and by the end of the shoot, his fingers were numb to the point that he struggled to press the cameras shutter release. After we finished the first shot, Scott was in pain, but we still managed to get a really nice shot. The sky was so clear and the sunlight was optimal.

The next day, we needed to shoot another destination shot. The subject was the Pavilion of Prince Teng, a landmark of Nanchang. The communication manger had an idea of the shot that she wanted, so we arrived on location in the early morning, when it was still dark and started to look for the right angle to achieve the shot. The area was in the midst of demolition, meaning the buildings in the surrounding area were not particularly safe. We found the perfect vantage on the top floor of one of the buildings. In an abandoned room in somone’s now vacant home we got the perfect angle to photograph the pavilion.

Although it was not the biggest shoot, only having to take 4 shots, it was a very intense job. We combated the shoot’s challenges and were blessed by the results.

CALYPSO Terrace Lounge Opening - CALYPSO

The Limelight team were invited to cover the opening of Calypso terrace lounge. This trendy establishment featured 1950’s style paparazzi photographers all kitted with trench coats and trilbies as well as antique cameras to capture the guests arriving on the red carpet, a retro spectacle adding class to a simple entrance.

Upon entry to the restaurant lounge the night began with live percussive performances featuring the restaurants cooks banging pots and pans and improvised cocktail shaker maracas in an impressive and surprising medley. The night also feature live bands and DJs.

With the great atmosphere the open terrace roof provided the exclusive venue we covered the night and where able to capture the glamour of the experience.

Jing-An Shangri-La Fashion Show 静安香格里拉制服时装秀

A couple of days before the grand opening of the Jing An Shangri-La hotel, we had the pleasure of joining the state of the hotel meeting where all staff were invited to celebrate the hard work that everyone has put into preparing the hotel for it’s big opening weekend. We were there to help capture this joyous moment, filled with touching speeches and of course, the fashion show that showcased each department of the hotel’s beautifully designed uniforms. Below, you can see Justin and Kristian filming and shooting the behind-the-scenes preparation for the fashion show. We used a mixture of video footage as well as images to produce a lovely video depicting the anticipation and excitement of not only the event taking that place but the celebration of the hard work that was contributed to make this hotel one of the best in Shanghai.

Marriott Shanghai Parkview

In February 2014 on a cold winter day, we took shots for the Marriott Shanghai Parkview, including this exterior shot.

We arrived early in the morning at the hotel with all the equipment for a full day of shooting - including tripods, lighting, cameras, and more. We followed a strict shooting schedule through the day covering 5 shots: bedroom, lobby, ballroom, VIP room, and exterior. Previously, we had gone through during our scouting and picked out angles for each shot with the final selection ultimately by the client.

With hotel shoots, we have adapted our lighting style to allow us to move freely about the hotel with minimal disturbance to guests and staff. This requires us to piece and layer our interiors in sections rather than lighting it all at once, so it's important to visualize how the image will come together in Photoshop.

For example, the lobby shot required us to move around the furniture in order to satisfy the client's desire to fill up the empty floor space. We had to shoot each sofa in sections as guests often would rest there, so our lighting method allows us to move to light a different section of the same shot until the guest moves. For the front reception area, the client wanted staff in the shot, so it was merely asking staff to hold still for a moment while we lit them individually with a softbox that mimicked the lamp lighting. Again, it's important to keep in mind the pieces as they will combine in post (ie: Photoshop) so blending and lighting areas in a seamless way to have the desired final outcome.

For the exterior, it was a bit different; we needed a little help of a fork lift in order to get high enough for a better perspective. Typically in this situation, you can use a tilt-shift lens in order to change the plane of focus and therefore get an entire building into focus, but there is no replacing merely "being higher up." For this exterior, we opted to shoot at dusk as the balance of the night sky and the building lights balance out nicely. We had a little bit of weather difficulties with some snow(!) and rain, but we ended up with some nice options that the client loved.

Scott up 7-8m on the fork lift. As there is less light at dusk, it's necessary to have longer exposures to capture the proper exposure. At the same time, we need to keep in mind to have our ISO high enough in order to not have the exposure too long, as the disadvantage of a fork lift on a windy day is that there WILL be some minor movement regardless of precautions taken. Long exposure + movement = blur.

Up higher on the lift: We liked the higher perspective due to the reflection in the glass of a cityscape. The client loved both angles, but ended up choosing the angle to the right.

At ground level: As you can see the building is a bit more distorted because of the perspective; however, the client liked the fact that the building appears taller.

Over the course of a few days in the month of June, we had the joy of taking a total of fourteen personality shots of the big personnel at the Jing An Shangri-La as well as eight product shots of some of the featured dishes from the various restaurants within the hotel.

As you can see from the numerous behind-the-scenes snapshots below, this was an exciting and interesting couple of days because we had the opportunity to meet and interact with the big personalities of the Shangri-La and capture them in their environment that best described them and their personality as well as the great work that they do.

Depending on the individual and the environment that they work in, we changed the lighting to accommodate the atmosphere we were trying to create around them. For example, we went for a moodier feel to represent some of the chefs at the 1515 West Bar & Grill by using soft box lighting down or a ring flash on the personality to intensify the overall feel of the photograph. Whereas, for the chefs of Café Liang, the goal was to have a bright open atmosphere therefore, we took advantage of the big windows and the enhanced the natural daylight feel.

Scott wanted to do something a little different for Franco Brodini, the head executive chef of the Shangri-La Jing An, so he decided to incorporate a ring flash for a unique look.
